- Nuclear Science: Physics Helping the World - Forum Moves to Second Day
The Scientific Forum, resumes today with sessions on "Advancing Radiation Medicine" in the morning and "Supporting Nuclear Safety" in the afternoon. Among highlights from yesterday's sessions, Nobel Laureate Burton Richter looked at the promise and problems of nuclear energy in his keynote address to forum participants. - General Debate
The General Debate continues today with statements from Slovenia, Latvia, Croatia, India, Egypt, Pakistan, Chile, Argentina, Finland, Burkina Faso, Israel, and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO).
- Meeting Global Water Challenges
A side event entitled "Meeting Global Water Challenges: The IAEA's Role" is being held today in Meeting Room L/M of the Austria Centre. The event is in recognition of the recently launched International Decade for Action, Water for Life 2005-2015. It is being held to create more awareness about the Agency's work in isotope hydrology to help Member States address water resource challenges. The event will feature brieef addresses by invited delgates, a "water tasting" and displays portraying activities of the Agency's Water Resource Programme. More »
Exhibits
- Exhibit on the Sterile Insect Technique
An exhibit on African Malaria Mosquito Sterile Insect Technique was opened 27 September and will be on display until Friday, 30 September 2005. The exhibit highlights IAEA collaboration with Member States in developing the sterile insect technique for the control of African malaria mosquitoes.
- Korean Exhibit Highlights Radiological & Medical Sciences
The Republic of Korea has regularly exhibited at the General Conference. This year, the focus of the Korean exhibit is on the status of the country's radiological & medical sciences, which have evolved continuously through cooperation with the Agency. The theme of the exhibition is "Bringing Hope for a Better Life", with particular emphasis on Korea's newly developed system for radiation emergency medical preparedness and the regional cyclotron centres across the country.
- Remediation of former Uranium Mining Sites
An exhibit on "WISMUT - New Horizons: Remediation of a Former Uranium Milling and Milling Site" will be displayed throughout the week at the Rotunda of the Vienna International Centre. The exhibit was officially opened today by Mr. Adamowitsch, State Secretary in Germany's Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour.
Meetings
- Technical Cooperation Meetings
Representatives of regional cooperative agreements in Africa, Asia, and Latin America are holding separate meetings at the IAEA today. Member State representatives from the regions of Europe and West Asia will also hold individual group meetings.
- Nuclear Information and Knowledge Management
The Agency's International Nuclear Information System (INIS) today held a briefing to present an overview of recent developments in nuclear information and knowledge information within INIS and the Nuclear Knowledge Management Section.
